Troopers Update Accident That Killed Motorcycle Rider In Red Lion

Red Lion – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing its investigation into a fatal motor vehicle crash which occurred earlier this afternoon, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Michael Austin.

Austin said the incident occurred at approximately 3:39 p.m., Monday, January 22, 2018, on DE Rt. 7 (Bear Corbitt Road) northbound, just north of DE Rt. 71 (Red Lion Road), Bear.

A 2005, Harley Davidson XLL, operated by a 35-year-old Bear man, had just turned left, on to DE Rt. 7 northbound from DE Rt. 71 eastbound, when he lost control of the motorcycle, according to Austin. The operator became separated from the bike, at which time he began to tumble in a northerly direction, before striking the undercarriage and front, left tire of a 2006 Buick Rendezvous, which was stopped in traffic at the red light on DE Rt. 7 southbound, at the intersection with DE Rt. 71. The motorcycle continued to slide in a northerly direction past the Buick, coming to rest on the DE Rt. 7 northbound shoulder.

The operator of the Harley Davidson, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene by responding EMS. Speed is not being considered a factor in the crash. Impairment on behalf of the operator is unknown at this time. Identification of the victim is pending notification of next of kin.

The operator of the Buick, a 57-year-old Bear woman, was not injured as a result of the collision.

DE Rt. 7 northbound was closed at DE Rt.71 for approximately 2 hours, as the crash was investigated and cleared.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Cpl. J. Aube of the Collision Reconstruction Unit, by calling 302-365-8483.
