County Police Officer Was Trapped In Yesterday’s Rollover Crash That Closed Route 1

File

Middletown – At 5:27 yesterday morning first responders from the Odessa Fire Company, along with crews from Port Penn, Delaware City, New Castle County Police and New Castle County Paramedics responded to Route 1 SB just south of the toll plaza for reports of a rollover crash.

Upon arrival, crews found a New Castle County Police vehicle on it’s side with the officer trapped  inside. Rescue crews worked to remove the roof of the vehicle to gain access to the officer.  New Castle County Police Spokesman Michel Eckerd said “officers discovered that the vehicle was resting on its side and the officer was conscious inside of the vehicle.”

Once the roof was off, the officer was removed from the fully marked patrol vehicle and transported to the hospital, where he was expected to be treated and released, according to Eckerd.

Route 1 was closed in both directions while crews worked to rescue the officer and clear the accident.

The accident occurred as the regional was experiencing heavy sleet and snow. Roads were very icy at the time.

Listen to the rescue here. We have removed silence and other calls that are not associated with this incident. 60 minutes was reduced to just under 6 minutes.
