Frederica-The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred last evening on Bay Road at Bowers Beach Road, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Melissa Jaffe.
Jaffe said the incident occurred on Sunday, March 25, 2018 at approximately 9:15 p.m. as a 2013 Silver Chevrolet Impala was traveling westbound on Bowers Beach Road approaching the traffic light at Bay Road. A 2016 white Kia Soul was traveling northbound on Bay Road in the right lane approaching the traffic light at Bowers Beach Road. Both vehicles entered the intersection when the Kia struck the Impala in the driver’s side door, said Jaffe. After the impact, the Impala started to spin off the roadway and struck a concrete barrier with its front end for its final resting place. The Kia also started to spin off the roadway, striking a concrete barrier with its rear bumper where it came to rest.
The operator of the Impala, 57-year-old Anna D. Tharp, of Felton was removed from the scene by EMS and transported to the Bayhealth Kent General Hospital were she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. Tharp was properly restrained and impairment does not appear to be a factor on her behalf at this time.
The operator of the Kia, a 43-year-old man of Essex, MD, and its passengers, a 42-year-old female from Middle River, MD, and a 12-year-old child were all removed from the scene by EMS and transported to the Bayhealth Kent General Hospital. The 43-year-old man and 42-year-old female were both admitted with non-life threatening injuries. The juvenile was treated and released with minor injuries. All occupants were properly restrained and impairment does not appear to be a factor on behalf of the operator at this time.
Bay Road at Bowers Beach Road was closed for approximately 4 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
