Wilmington – Shortly before 9:00 AM Wilmington Firefighters on the A platoon were alerted to a large fuel spill at the Port of Wilmington.
As units were responding, an updated report was received stating approximately 500-1,000 gallons of gasoline was spilling from an 8,500-gallon roadway tanker/tractor trailer that was involved in a minor motor vehicle collision, said Lieutenant Andrew Cavanaugh.
Upon arrival of Engine 2, the report was confirmed, approximately 500 gallons of fuel had already leaked from the trailer.
Fire department crews deployed fire hose lines as a protective measure and began securing the area.
Additional resources were requested by the Incident Commander, Fire Chief Michael Donohue, bringing the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC), Belvedere Fire Company’s Hazardous Material Response unit, and the Delaware State Fire School.
Measures were taken to secure all the leaking fuel from reaching any storm drains or environmentally sensitive areas. DNREC and Wilmington Firefighters formulated a plan to mitigate the leak and secure the trailer. Firefighters are still currently on scene assisting DNREC with the transferring of the remaining fuel.
Approximately 31 fire and EMS personnel responded to the fire. The following units responded: Engine 2, Engine 1, Squad 4, Squrt 3, Ladder 2, Battalion-1, Battalion-2, F-1, Deputy 2, Battalion-11, F9, Dept. of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, Delaware State Fire School, St. Francis EMS, and New Castle County Paramedics
