Police: New York Man Gives Newark Officers Fake Id While Trying To Return Stolen Property

Newark – On Wednesday April 4, 2018 at approximately 1:00 p.m. the Newark Police responded to the Home Depot in Suburban Plaza for a report of an individual in the store who was attempting to return stolen items, according to Sgt. Gerald Bryda.

Bryda said Home Depot employees recognized that the items being returned were the exact items stolen the day prior from a North Wilmington Home Depot.

The stolen items consisted of approximately $990.00 of window shades. Officers arrived on scene and were able to detain the subject who was returning the stolen items. The subject presented officers with a fictitious Pennsylvania driver’s license, according to Byrda.

The subject was taken into custody and transported to Newark PD HQ where his true identity was confirmed. Officers arrested 33-year-old Jonathan Sanchez of Bronx, NY for Receiving Stolen Property Under $1500, Criminal Impersonation and Possession of a Fictitious License.

Sanchez was arraigned through Justice of the Peace Court #2 and transported to Howard R. Young Correctional Institute in lieu of $2500 cash bond.
