Fire Marshal: Fire Causes $100,000 Damage To Birchwood Park Home, One Injured, Six Displaced

 

The Delaware Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating this afternoon’s fire in Newark, Delaware that heavily damaged a home, according to Assistant State Fire Marshal Michael Chionchio.

Chionchio said the blaze, reported around 1:30 pm, occurred in the 700 block of Birchwood Drive in Birchwood Park. The Christiana Fire Company arrived on the scene with flames visibly shooting from the inside of the one-story dwelling. One 81 year old female occupant was treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation.

State fire investigators continue to search for the fire’s origin and cause. Heavy fire damage, estimated at $100,000, has displaced six adults. The American Red Cross is assisting those in need with emergency items.

This fire remains under investigation.

Update 

Birchwood Park – At approximately 1:30 New Castle County Paramedics, Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder, Christiana, Elsmere, Wilmington Manor, and Mill Creek Fire Companies were dispatched to the 700 block of Birchwood Drive in Birchwood Park for a residential house fire, according to Yvonne Russell.

Russell said upon arrival, New Castle County Paramedics found a patient, 81-year-old female, suffered smoke inhalation injuries. The patient was treated on scene and transported to Christiana Hospital via Elsmere Fire Company ambulance. The patient was in stable condition at the time of transport.

All fire personnel were accounted for without injuries.

Delaware State Fire Marshal is investigating the fire.

Breaking Report

Birchwood Park – At approximately 1:40 this afternoon, Sunday, July 22, 2018, firefighters from Christiana Fire Company, along with crews from area fire companies responded to Birchwood Drive for reports of a residential structure fire.

Upon arrival, crews reported that smoke and fire was showing from the home. Crews began an attack on the fire while simultaneously searching the home for occupants. Crews quickly reported negative results on the search and continued their work to knock down the fire.

Both the interior and the exterior of the home suffered extensive smoke and fire damage as a result of the fire.

One person was transported to the hospital via ambulance after being evaluated by New Castle County Paramedics.

Fire marshals are on scene investigating the fire.
