Police Update Police Chase That Ended With Head-On Collision In NewarK

On July 7, 2018, at approximately 5:46 pm, University of Delaware Police received a call and was notified that a juvenile female was in a vehicle in the parking lot of the Bob Carpenter Center, and that she was threatening to harm herself, according to police.

Officials said an Officer from UDPD immediately responded to the parking lot of the Bob Carpenter Center and attempted to contact the distressed juvenile, at which time she fled in her vehicle, from the parking lot, north bound on 896.

The UDPD Officer activated their emergency equipment in an attempt to stop the suspect, who continued to flee on 896 at a high rate of speed, resulting in the suspect vehicle striking a DART bus, and two other cars at the intersection of 896 and E. Park Place, according to police.

The suspect and one of the people operating one of the other cars that were struck were transported to Christiana ER and treated for their injuries.

No other injuries have been reported at this time. Warrants for Reckless Endangering, Excessive Speed, Disregard Traffic Control Device, Failure to Maintain Lane, and Disregard a Police Officer’s Signal were obtained for the juvenile suspect by the UD Police.

The suspect is not a student at the University of Delaware. The Newark PD is handling the crash investigation.

Breaking Report

Newark – Just before 6:00 this evening the Newark Police along crews from Aetna Hose, Hook, and Ladder responded to the intersection of South College Avenue and East Park Place for reports of a head-on collision with injuries.

Upon arrival, crews found a four-vehicle crash that reportedly occurred as a result of a University of Delaware Police pursuit.

Witness at the scene said that a suspect, fleeing from UD Police, left the northbound lane of South College Avenue and entered the southbound lane. As the vehicle switched lanes to go around a DART bus, stopped at the traffic light, it clipped the bus and hit an oncoming vehicle.

Two people, including the suspect, were transported to the hospital. One of the patients was transported with non-life threatening injuries the other patient was transported with a trauma alert.

Another witness at the scene said the two passengers on the DART bus fled the scene after the accident.

South College Avenue remains closed while police investigate the accident.

Crews from Belvedere’s HAZMAT 30 are on scene working to clean up hydraulic fluid coming from the bus.

Police have not said why they were chasing the suspect.
