Milford-The Delaware State Police are investigating a serious crash that occurred last evening on (SR-1) Bay Road, Milford, according to Director of Public Information, Sergeant Richard Bratz.
Bratz said the preliminary investigation has determined the incident occurred on Sunday, July 15, 2018, at approximately 5:28 p.m. on Bay Road in the area of New Wharf Road, Milford. A 2001 Volkswagen Beetle operated by a 16-year-old female of Bridgeville, was on New Wharf Road attempting to turn right onto northbound (SR-1).
The Volkswagen Beetle entered SR-1 northbound and crossed over both northbound lanes into the path of a 2008 Honda Pilot which was traveling in the left lane, according to Bratz. The Volkswagen collided with the Honda Pilot, operated by a 72-year-old female of Newark. This caused the Honda Pilot to be redirected across the grass median of Bay Road into the southbound lanes where it struck the side of a 2016 Volvo Tractor-Trailer, operated by a 62-year-old man of Seaford. As a result of this collision, the rear axle of the trailer to become dislodged. The Honda Pilot rotated counter-clockwise and stopped in the left southbound lane of SR-1. The Tractor-Trailer continued southbound dragging the rear axle.
The 16-year-old driver and her passenger were transported to the Bayhealth Milford Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. The 16-year-old was cited for Failure To Remain Stopped and Failure To Have Insurance Identification in Possession.
The 72-year- old female driver of the Honda Pilot was transported by the Delaware State Police Aviation to the Christiana Hospital with serious injuries. One juvenile passenger in the vehicle with serious injuries was flown by the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit to the AI-DuPont Hospital. Two other passengers in the Honda Pilot, one adult and one juvenile, were transported by EMS to Bayhealth Milford Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The 62-year-old driver of the Volvo Truck and Tractor-Trailer were not injured in this collision.
The roadway in the area of the crash was closed for approximately five hours while the investigation was conducted and the roadway was cleared.
