18-Year-Old Killed After Car Slams Into Tree, Troopers Investigating

Laurel – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash involving a single vehicle, that occurred in Laurel, early Sunday morning, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Michael Austin.

Austin said the incident occurred at approximately 2:53 a.m., Sunday, August 12, 2018, on Fire Tower Rd., approximately .4 miles north of U.S. 9 (County Seat Highway), Laurel. A 2004 Kia Optima, being operated, and solely occupied by an 18-year-old Laurel woman, was traveling northbound on Fire Tower Road, north of U.S. 9, at an apparent high rate of speed, said Austin. While negotiating a left curve in the road, the operator over corrected and the vehicle began to spin. The Kia proceeded to slide off the roadway, before striking a tree, where the vehicle came to rest.

Austin said the driver, who was not properly restrained, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Identification is pending next of kin notification.

Fire Tower Road was closed for approximately 3 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
