Fatal Motorcycle Crash On Lighthouse Road In Smyrna, Woman Identified

Smyrna- The Deleware State Police have updated a story we first brought you last Monday.

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a crash that occurred on August 12, 2018, that has turned into a fatal, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Melissa Jaffe.

Jaffe said the incident occurred on Sunday, August 12, 2018, at approximately 2:16 p.m., when a 2012 Harley Davidson was traveling eastbound on Lighthouse Road attempting to make a left turn into the Boondocks Restaurant entrance/exit. A 2005 Honda X13 (3-wheeled motorcycle) was following directly behind the Harley Davidson.

The operator of the Harley Davidson had his turn signal on and applied his brakes to stop and make the left turn. The operator of the Honda failed to see the Harley Davidson’s turn signal in time and locked his front brakes up. Subsequently, the Honda struck the rear of the Harley Davidson, said Jaffe. The collision caused both operators and a passenger of the Honda to be ejected, and the Honda to overturn on its right side.

The operator of the Harley Davidson, a 45-year-old male from Townsend, was not wearing a helmet and was transported to the Bayhealth Kent General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The operator of the Honda, a 71-year-old male from Townsend, was not wearing a helmet and was transported to the Christiana Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The passenger of the Honda, 76-year-old Carolyn Gamble from Townsend, was wearing a helmet and was transported to the Christiana Hospital in serious condition. On August 17, 2018, Carolyn Gamble succumbed to her injuries.

Lighthouse Road was closed for approximately 5 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.

 

Breaking Report

Smyrna – At approximately 2:20 yesterday afternoon, Sunday, August 12, 2018, rescue crews from the Smyrna Citizens Hose Company, along with the Leipsic Volunteer Fire Company, Cheswold Volunteer Fire Company, Kent Count Medics, Delaware State Police, Trooper 4 (Delaware State Police Aviation New Castle) and Trooper 2 (Delaware State Police Aviation Sussex) responded to the 800 block of Lighthouse Road in Smyrna for a motorcycle crash with injuries.

Upon arrival, crews reported that two riders were seriously injured and that at least one helicopter would be utilized. While en route  Trooper 4 was advised to land in the field next to Boondocks Resturant to make access to the scene.
Within a few minutes, Trooper 4 touched down near the accident and the first patient was transferred to the helicopter for transport.

As Trooper 4 was preparing to lift off, Command alerted Trooper 2 that they would be utilized to transport the second patient. Trooper 2 was advised to land in the same area were Trooper 4 had landed previously.

Trooper 4 transported their patient to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center with serious injuries.
It is believed that Trooper 2 also transported their patient to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center. That patient was suffering from serious injuries as well.

Residents report that the road was closed for several hours as Troopers investigated the scene.
