Man Injured In Philadelphia Pike Motorcycle Accident Succumbs To Injuries

The Delaware State Police have identified Andrew C. Douglas, 65 of Claymont as the operator of a 1992 Harley Davidson motorcycle that was involved in a crash that occurred at approximately 11:26 a.m., Wednesday, September 5, 2018, on Philadelphia Pike in the area of Holly Oak Rd.

Douglas was originally admitted to the Christiana Hospital in critical condition, however, on Friday, September 14, 2018, Douglas succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash and was pronounced deceased.

The Delaware State Police are continuing to investigate a crash involving a motorcycle that occurred at approximately 11:26 a.m., Wednesday, September 5, 2018, on Philadelphia Pike in the area of Holly Oak Rd.

The investigation has determined that a 1982 Harley Davidson XLH motorcycle, operated by a 65-year-old Claymont man, was traveling Philadelphia Pike southbound just south of W. Holly Oak Rd. A 2007 Lexus GS450, operated by a 56-year-old Wilmington woman, was traveling Philadelphia Pike northbound and proceeded to turn left into a business located 1507 Philadelphia Pike, directly in front of the motorcycle. The motorcycle operator applied his brakes in order to avoid colliding with the Lexus but could not do so and struck the right side of the vehicle.

The motorcycle operator was transported to the Christiana Hospital in serious condition.

The operator of the Lexus was not injured as a result of the crash. She was cited for “Vehicle Turning Left Must Yield the Right of Way”

Philadelphia Pike was closed for approximately 90 minutes while the scene was investigated and cleared.

Claymont – Rescue crews from the Claymont Fire Company, along with New Castle County Paramedics, Trooper 4 and Delaware State Police have responded to the 1500 block of Philadelphia Pike for reports of a vehicle accident involving a motorcycle.

Upon arrival, crews have ordered the road closed between Silverside Road and Holly Oak Road.

The patient is en route the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center with New Castle County Paramedics accompanying.
