Original Report

Wilmington – An 18-year-old John Dickinson High School Honor Roll student was killed this morning after crashing into a utility pole on Newport Road, according to school officials.

At 7:09 this morning rescue crews from the Mill Creek and Cranston Heights Fire Companies, along with New Castle County Paramedics and Police were dispatched to the 1800 block of Newport Road in the Washington Heights neighborhood.

Upon arrival, crews found two patients involved in a motor vehicle crash. The driver, identified as an 18-year-old senior at the school, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, a 15-year-old friend of the driver was transported to the Trauma Center at Christiana Hospital in Stanton. A spokesman for the New Castle County Police said that the passenger’s injuries were not life-threatening.

Officials from the School District said that counselors are at the school and will be there as long as they are needed.

The families of both the passenger and the driver have been notified.

Police said the investigation revealed that the vehicle left the roadway, initially striking a telephone pole before hitting a tree. Speed was the main contributing factor to this accident, according to police.

Just before 8:30 this morning official with the New Castle County Police said that an accident in the 1800 block of Newport Road has a closure of the road.

We are being told that the scene is an active investigation. The alert said that Newport Road is closed at Kiamensi @ Newport Rd & Old Capitol Trail @ Newport Rd.

Officials at the school said that the road is not closed in front of the school so the road is likely closed at Kiamensi Street, not Kiamensi Road.
