On Saturday evening, December 29, 2018, at 8:50, Newark Police were dispatched to the area of Thorn Lane in the Studio Green Apartments for multiple calls about shots fired in the parking lot, according to Lt Andrew Rubin.
Rubin said responding officers found a vehicle in the parking lot with damage consistent with a shotgun and found spent shotgun shell casings in the parking lot. Responding officers determined that at least one of the individuals involved in the shooting had fled into an apartment in one of the buildings nearby.
While searching the building officers found a 19-year-old man who had sustained multiple physical injuries consistent with having been shot with birdshot from a shotgun, according to Rubin. The victim was transported by ambulance to an area hospital, where he was treated for his injuries and later released.
As they continued to investigate, officers located Nicholas Hulsey, 25, of Newark, inside the same apartment. Officers learned that Hulsey contacted the victim via phone to discuss a mutual acquaintance. The victim responded to Thorn Lane to talk with the acquaintance. As the victim exited his vehicle, Hulsey shot the victim with a shotgun multiple times, according to Rubin.
Hulsey was charged with the following offenses:
Assault First Degree
Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
Aggravated Menacing
Reckless Endangering First Degree
Possession of a Deadly Weapon by a Person Prohibited
Criminal Mischief Over $1000
Possession of Marijuana in a Personal Use Quantity
A shotgun and an AR-15 rifle were seized from within the apartment, which was rented by Hulsey, according to Rubin.
Hulsey was taken into custody without incident and later appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #11 in New Castle. He is being held at Howard R Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington on $28,501 secured bond.
