Reports: House Fire Claims The Life Of Elderly Woman, Cause Under Investigation

The Delaware Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating a house fire that left one person dead Tuesday night, according to Assistant State Fire Marshal Michael Chionchio.

At around 9:45 last evening, firefighters from the Bridgeville Fire Company, along with other area fire companies, responded to a home in the 14000 block of Sussex Highway in Bridgeville.

As crews responded, they were alerted that there was a fire in the garage and that an elderly woman was still inside the home.

The first firefighters arrived on the scene reported that the home was fully involved and immediately began to attack the fire.

Firefighters found one person deceased inside the home, according to Chionchio. Four other occupants were able to escape with no injury.

State fire investigators are on the scene searching for the fire’s origin and cause, said Chionchio. The Division of Forensic Science will conduct an autopsy on the victim.

Heavy fire damage was estimated at $100,000.
