Giving back to the community was simple for Steve Baccino, senior rate analyst with Delmarva Power. All he needed to help two local community organizations raise money was a dance floor, a dance partner, and a song that made him move.
Not a regular ballroom dancer, but an active board member for Jobs for Delaware Graduates, Steve was open to the challenge of dancing and helping organizations that give back to the community. Dancing with the First State Stars was organized to support Mom’s House® Wilmington and Jobs for Delaware Graduates, two local nonprofits with a focus on education and opportunities that give kids and their families the tools to face some of life’s toughest challenges.
Dancing to KC and the Sunshine Band’s “Boogie Shoes,” Steve and his dance partner competed against nine other dance teams. Awards were handed out for best costume, best dance, and most popular dance group. Steve and his partner walked away with the Mirror Ball for best dance—not too bad for his first time dancing on stage.
“It was great to see the turnout from many of the participants’ friends and family,” said Baccino. “The more than $80,000 received through generous donations will benefit both organizations greatly in their missions. The number in attendance and the money raised, provide a strong indicator of just how important children and families are in the community.”
This is just one example of the many volunteering and fundraising opportunities our employees participated in throughout 2018. In total, employees volunteered more than 15,800 hours of their time to local organizations throughout the Delmarva Power service area.
Jobs for Delaware Graduates focuses on helping Delaware high school students graduate, pursue post-secondary education, and obtain entry-level employment. Mom’s House® supports single parents and local families by providing them resources to be successful in providing a strong family environment. Both organizations plan to use their share of the donations to further support their missions.
