Kirkwood Highway Closed After Car Slams Into Occupied Bus Stop, Four In Hospital

At 6:37 this evening, Saturday, January 5, 2019, rescue crews from the Mill Creek Fire Company, along with crews from surrounding companies responded to Kirkwood Highway in the area of Limestone Road.

While en route crews were told that multiple vehicles and a pedestrian were involved in the accident.  Upon their arrival, crews found three patients in need of medical treatment.

A pedestrian waiting in a covered DART bus stop was struck when a vehicle crossed over from the westbound lanes, entered the eastbound lanes and jumped the curb, and struck the bus stop and two parked vehicles.

The patient at the bus stop and the passenger of the striking vehicle were both transported. As crews worked to treat the first two patients, a third patient was located across the street. The striking vehicle had struck their vehicle before crossing over. That patient was transported as well.

The driver of the vehicle that crashed into the bus stop initially stayed at the scene but fled on foot before authorities arrived, according to officials.  Troopers were behind the building with a K-9 unit searching for the drive as crews worked to treat the patients.

The driver was reportedly found at the hospital, according to officials at the scene. This has not been confirmed.

Kirkwood Highway was partially shut down for a period of time. Most lanes have since reopened.
