New Castle County Officer Stabbed After Foot Chase In Claymont

Today, May 11, at approximately 11:45 a.m. officers from the New Castle County Division Of Police were dispatched to the community of Northridge for a report of a suspicious male. According to the dispatch, this male subject was seen trespassing in the rear yards of several homes.

When the officers arrived at the scene, they began a search of the area. One officer located a male who matched the description provided by the callers; he was walking in the area of Harvey Road and Interstate 95. When the officer attempted to contact the male subject, he fled on foot.

A brief foot chase ensued and the officer was able to catch up to the male. Then a brief struggle ensued. During the struggle, the officer, a 17 veteran of the Division sustained a stab wound to his lower extremity. He is currently being treated at a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries, officials said.

The male subject has been taken into custody and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Police did not say what injuries the suspect sustained.

Detectives from the New Castle County Police Criminal Investigations Unit have assumed the investigation.

Breaking Report

At approximately 12:21 this afternoon rescue crews responded to I-95 at the Harvey Road exit for reports of a stabbing.

Trooper 4, originally dispatched to the scene was recalled shortly after crews arrived on scene.

Reports from the scene indicate that a police officer may be involved in the incident. That has not been confirmed.
