Original Story

Wilmington – The Delaware State Police are investigating a serious crash involving a pedestrian that occurred late Thursday night, on I-95 in the area of Concord Pike, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Michael Austin.

Austin said the crash occurred at approximately 10:08 p.m., Thursday, May 23, 2019, on northbound I-95 approximately .5 miles north of Concord Pike. A 2006 Buick Lacrosse, operated by a 33-year-old Wilmington man was initially traveling northbound on I-95 in the right lane. For an undetermined reason, the Buick failed to remain in the lane of travel and entered into a construction zone where the right side of the vehicle struck a concrete barrier. As a result of impacting the barrier, the vehicle sustained a flat tire which caused it to become disabled, partially in the center grass median and partially in the left lane of travel. After becoming disabled both the driver and a 28-year-old female passenger exited the vehicle. The driver then entered into the lane of travel to inspect the damage at which time he was struck by a 2016 Toyota Camry, operated by a 45-year-old Wilmington man that was traveling northbound in the left lane.

The pedestrian, who was wearing all dark, non-reflective clothing was transported to the Christiana Hospital in serious condition. The female was not injured.

The driver of the Toyota was also not injured. Neither impairment nor improper driving are being considered as factors on his behalf.

Northbound I-95 was closed between Concord Pike and Marsh Rd. for approximately 2.5 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Sgt. D. Alexander of the Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit by calling 302-365-8484.
