New Castle – The Delaware State Police are investigating a serious crash involving a pedestrian that took place on Basin Road in the area of the Penn Mart Shopping Center, Thursday night.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:46 p.m., Thursday, June 20, 2019, on Basin Road (DE 141), south of the U.S. 13 overpass. A 2008 Honda Civic, operated by a 30-year-old Newark man was traveling southbound on Basin Road in the left lane. At the same time, a 73-year-old Wilmington was attempting cross Basin Road and walked directly into the path of the Honda, according to Troopers. After being struck by the front end of the Honda the pedestrian was thrown to the pavement. The Honda came to a controlled stop and remained at the scene.
The pedestrian, who was wearing non-reflective clothing, carrying no light and not utilizing a pedestrian crosswalk was transported to the Christiana Hospital with serious injuries. Alcohol is being considered as a contributing factor on his behalf, according to Troopers.
The driver of the Honda was not injured. Neither improper driving nor impairment are being considered as factors on his behalf.
New Castle County Paramedics and crews from the Wilmington Manor Fire Company were dispatched to the scene. Upon their arrival, they found one patient needing advanced life support care, according to New Castle County Paramedics Senior Corporal Ruoy Koontz.
Koontz said the patient was treated on scene for a possible head injury and lower extremity injuries. He was transported to Christiana Hospital via Wilmington Manor Fire Company ambulance accompanied by New Castle County Paramedics. He was listed in critical condition at the time of transport.
Southbound Basin Road between US 13 and the Penn Mart Shopping Center was closed for approximately 2.5 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
