Bicyclist Struck In South Bethany Succumbs To Her Injuries, Troopers Release Name

South Bethany – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate a crash that has turned fatal involving a bicyclist, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Melissa Jaffe.

Jaffe said the incident occurred on Thursday, July 4, 2019, at approximately 10:16 p.m., when a 2005 Toyota Sienna, operated by a 50-year-old Red Lion, PA man, was traveling southbound on Coastal Highway in the left lane, approaching Evergreen Road. A bicycle, operated by a 27-year-old Annapolis, MD woman was traveling westbound across the median of Coastal Highway and proceeded into the southbound lanes, directly into the path of the Toyota.

The cyclist, identified as 27-year-old Kelly M. Scruggs was initially transported to the Beebe Hospital before being transferred to the Christian Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries on July 6, 2019.

South Bethany – The South Bethany Police Department with assistance from the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a crash involving a bicyclist that took occurred Thursday night on Coastal Highway.

The initial investigation has determined that at approximately 10:16 p.m., Thursday, July 4, 2019, a 2005 Toyota Sienna, operated by a 50-year-old Red Lion, PA man, was traveling southbound on Coastal Highway in the left lane, approaching Evergreen Rd. A bicycle, operated by a 27-year-old Annapolis, MD woman was traveling westbound across the median of Coastal Hwy., and proceeded into the southbound lanes, directly into the path of the Toyota. The front end of the Toyota struck the cyclist on the right side, knocking her to the pavement. After impact, the Toyota came to an immediate stop and remained at the scene.

The cyclist was initially transported to Beebe Hospital before being transferred to the Christian Hospital where she remains in critical condition. It was determined that she was not wearing a helmet and had no functioning lights on the bicycle.

The driver of the Toyota was uninjured. Impairment on his behalf is not deemed as a factor in the collision.

Breaking Report

South Bethany -Just after 10:15 last evening, Thursday, July 4, 2019, Rescue crews from the Bethany Beach Fire Company along with  Sussex County Medics 105, 109, and 205 responded to Coastal Highway  (Route 1) at Evergreen Road for reports of a motor vehicle accident.

While en route to the scene crews learned that a woman riding a bicycle had been involved in a collision with a vehicle.

The first arriving crews blocked the road and command ordered Route 1 SB closed at the McDonalds about a block away.

Delaware State Police issues the following traffic advisory last evening “Bethany Beach: Rt 1 southbound in S. Bethany is closed due to a motor vehicle crash.”

Initial reports from the scene indicate that the woman was seriously injured.  Delaware State Police Troopers with support from rescue crews remained on scene for approximately three hours.
