Man Seriously Injured In Motorcycle Crash Charged With Vehicular Assault, DUI

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware – The Delaware State Police (DSP) are investigating a serious crash involving a motorcycle that took place on Plantations Road (SR 1D) northwest of Rehoboth Beach last evening.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:26 p.m., Friday, July 26, 2019, on Plantations Road northwest of John J. Williams Highway. A 2015 Harley-Davidson FLH motorcycle, operated by a 54-year-old male with a 58-year-old female passenger, was traveling southbound on the shoulder of (SR 1D) during heavy traffic at a high rate of speed, according to DSP Director of Public Information, Sergeant Richard Bratz.

A 2018 Toyota Highlander, operated by a 54-year-old Maryland man, was turning left at a residence at the same time the motorcycle was traveling on the shoulder and both collided. The motorcycle driver and the passenger were ejected. The operator of the Toyota Highlander stopped at the scene.

The motorcycle driver, Robert Willoughby, 54 of Smyrna, and his passenger sustained serious injuries and were removed from the scene by EMS. Both were transported to the Beebe Hospital and later transported to the Christiana Hospital. The pending charges include Passing on the Right, Vehicular Assault 2nd Degree and Driving Under the Influence.

The driver of the Toyota Highlander was not injured in the crash.
