Troopers: Gunman Who Robbed New Castle Wawa Charged, Released On Unsecured Bond

New Castle – The Delaware State Police have arrested 55-year-old James McHugh of New Castle in connection with the armed robbery of a New Castle area convenience store that occurred last month, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Michael Austin.

Austin said the incident occurred at approximately 1:36 a.m., Wednesday, June 12, 2019, at the Wawa located at 7 E. Basin Rd., New Castle. A male suspect later identified as McHugh, approached the clerk at the sales counter, displayed a handgun, and stole cigarettes, according to Austin. After the robbery, McHugh was observed fleeing the area in a dark-colored Chevy SUV.

Through various investigative leads and measures detectives identified the suspect vehicle as a black Chevy Equinox with Delaware tags which were positively linked to McHugh.

On Friday, July 12, 2019, the Equinox was observed traveling on U.S. 13 in the area I-295 and McHugh was identified as the driver. A traffic stop was conducted and McHugh was taken into custody without incident. A subsequent search of McHugh’s residence in the unit block of Godwin Road in New Castle and the Equinox produced evidence further linking him to the robbery, said Austin.

McHugh was charged with one count each of Robbery 1st Degree and Shoplifting. He was then arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court #2 and released on $20,000.00 unsecured bond.
