On August 20, 2019, at about 1:30 in the morning, Newark Police responded to a report of a loud and disorderly party in a room at the Red Roof Inn located at 1119 South College Avenue in Newark, according to Lt. Andrew Rubin.
Rubin said responding officers arrived to find a large group of people being loud, consuming alcohol and smoking marijuana in a hotel room. The room was found to be occupied by twelve people, including five juveniles. Only one of the subjects was over 21 years-of-age. Upon a search of the room, officers located a handgun with an obliterated serial number, along with alcohol and a small amount of marijuana.
Officers arrested Deonte Lewis, 21, of Newark, for the following offenses:
Possession of a Firearm with an Obliterated Serial Number
Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon
Endangering the Welfare of a Child
Providing Alcohol to a Minor
Possession of Marijuana
Lewis was a registered guest at the hotel. Lewis appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #11 in New Castle and was committed to the Howard R Young Correctional Facility in Wilmington in default of $25,002.00 cash bail.
In addition, officers arrested Brandon Hagler, 19, of Newark, for Underage Consumption of Alcohol and Possession of Marijuana. He was released on his own recognizance for a court appearance at a later date.
Officers also arrested a 17-year-old male from Newark for Underage Consumption of Alcohol and Possession of Marijuana. He was released on his own recognizance for a court appearance at a later date.
Rubin said that this incident is not related to the recent homicide at the same location.
