Wilmington- The Delaware Department of Correction (DOC) and Delaware State Police are investigating the death of an offender at Howard R. Young Correctional Institution (HRYCI) which occurred early Saturday morning, according to Deputy Bureau Chief of Prisons Paul Shavack.
Shavack said a preliminary investigation has determined that the incident occurred on Saturday, August 03, 2019 at approximately 1:19 a.m. after James Hamilton, 56-years-old from Wilmington, Delaware was receiving medical care in the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution Infirmary for a medical condition which occurred earlier.
Hamilton suffered cardiopulmonary arrest while in the infirmary. Life-saving measures were immediately initiated by medical staff until New Castle County Emergency Medical Services arrived. Hamilton was pronounced deceased in the infirmary by New Castle County EMS Paramedics.
James Hamilton was being held at HRYCI since July 31, 2019, for a Violation of Probation- Possession of Narcotics and related charges.
Hamilton’s body was turned over to the Division of Forensic Science to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Shavack said the preliminary investigation by the Delaware State Police Criminal Investigative Unit and the Delaware Department of Correction has indicated that there were no suspicious circumstances and no foul play suspected at this time.
