Troopers Charge Maryland Man With Organized Crime And Racketeering

Laurel– The Delaware State Police Troop 4 Financial Crimes Unit has arrested 58-year-old William G. Carey, of Salisbury, Maryland on racketeering and theft-related charges as part of an ongoing fraud investigation.

The original investigation began in September 2018, when a fraud report was filed in reference to a sales agreement that was made with Midway RV & Sales located at 32101 Sussex Highway in Laurel, according to Delaware State Police Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Michael Austin.

Austin said it was learned that Carey was taking in consignment used motorhomes and travel trailers and re-selling them. Carey would allegedly take the victim’s money to purchase the consigned motorhomes and travel trailers and not pay off the previous liens, according to Austin. Carey would then allegedly submit falsified sales invoices to the banks and department of motor vehicles, Austin added.

Carey was originally arrested on April 4, 2019, on the following charges:

Theft by False Pretense over $1500.00 (4 counts)
Falsifying Business Records (15 counts)
Offering False Instrument for Filing
Defrauding Secured Creditors
Deceptive Business Practices (6 counts)

As a result of the ongoing investigation Carey was arrested on Friday, August 23, 2019, and charged with following additional offenses:

Organized Crime and Racketeering
Theft Greater than $100,000.00 (2 counts)
Theft Greater than $50,000.00 but Less than $100,000.00

Carey was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court #2 and released on $155,000.00 unsecured bail.
