A Dover man has pleaded guilty to the 2018 stabbing death on the grounds of a state museum.
The investigation began at approximately 7:26 a.m. on Tuesday, February 20, 2018, after Troopers were called to respond to the rear grounds of the John Dickinson Plantation Mansion House located at 340 Kitts Hummock Road for the report of an unresponsive subject.
Upon their arrival, Troopers located a male subject laying on the ground with multiple suspected stab wounds. The male victim was pronounced dead at the scene by responding paramedics. The victim has been identified as 36-year-old Thomas M. Bunting Jr. of Milford. While Detectives from the Homicide Unit were conducting their investigation, they were informed by the Harrington Police Department that the victim’s vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation in the town limits. The driver, identified as Malcolm A. Casson of Dover, was taken into custody without incident and transported to Troop 3.
As a result of interviews and other investigative measures, Carson was charged with Murder 1st and Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony. He was arraigned out of the Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center on $1,060.000.00 secured bond.
After accepting the plea, a Superior Court judge immediately sentenced Casson to 40 years in prison, followed by 6 months of work release then 3 years of probation.
Casson will also need to pay restitution to the victim’s family and remain on probation until all of his financial obligations are met.
Our readers will remember that Casson was also charged in the stabbing of his acquaintance that occurred back on August 19, 2016, in Smyrna. In that case Casson was initially charged Attempted Manslaughter, Assault 1st degree, Possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, Conspiracy 2nd degree and committed to Department of Corrections for lack of $151,000 secured bond.
