At around 1:45 this afternoon an ambulance crews were dispatched to the Newark Police Department jail for reports of a medical condition.

Several minutes last, at around 2:15 ambulance crews alerted 911 dispatch that a prisoner had escaped from their ambulance. It’s not clear if the crew was assaulted during the escape.

When the ambulance was near the intersection of Harmony Road and Route 4, the prisoner, wearing handcuffs, bolted from the ambulance.  Reports indicate that the man ran towards the south before doubling back towards the Harmony Plaza Shopping Center.

An officer following the ambulance with the assistance of responding officers located the prisoner behind the shopping center on Cheswold Blvd. minutes later and took him into custody.

He has since been transported to the hospital for treatment.

Reports indicate that the man was wanted on existing warrants and was facing additional felony charges.

This is a developing story.
