Dover- The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash involving a motorcycle that occurred this morning. according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Juanita Huey-Smith.
Huey-Smith said the incident occurred on September 10, 2019, at approximately 5:59 a.m., when a 2013 Augusta Sport Motorcycle was traveling southbound on DuPont Highway, south of Messina Hill Road. A 2004 Ford Excursion was also proceeding southbound on DuPont Highway, in front of the motorcycle.
The operator of the motorcycle passed the Excursion on the left, subsequently losing control, according to Huey-Smith. The driver was then ejected from the motorcycle and landed in the left lane of travel.
A 2002 Ford Explorer was southbound on DuPont Highway south of Messina Hill Road and subsequently struck the motorcycle operator in the left lane of travel.
The operator of the motorcycle, a 24-year-old Dover man was transported to the Christiana Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. His name is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin.
The operator of the Excursion, a 25-year-old female from Dover remained on scene. She was properly restrained and not injured.
The operator of the Explorer, a 24-year-old female from Smyrna remained on scene. She was properly restrained and not injured.
The roadway was closed for approximately 3 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
The crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit. The Delaware State Police are asking for anyone who may have witnessed this collision to please contact Cpl/3 Joseph Lane at 302-698-8457.
