Update

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating a fatal crash involving a pedal cyclist that occurred last evening, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Melissa Jaffe.

Jaffe said the incident occurred on September 20, 2019, at approximately 8:55 p.m., when a pedal cyclist was traveling northbound on DuPont Boulevard (U.S. 113) in the left lane just south of Hickory Street. A 2011 Ford Escape was traveling northbound on U.S. 113 approaching the vicinity of the pedal cyclist. Due to the fact that the bicycle was not equipped with lights, the operator of the escape failed to see the pedal cyclist in front of him causing the front of the escape to impact the rear of the bicycle, said Jaffe. The pedal cyclist was subsequently ejected from the bicycle.

The pedal cyclist, a 62-year-old male from Frankford, DE was wearing dark clothing and his bicycle was not equipped with any type of lights. He was transported to the Beebe Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased. His name is being withheld at this time pending the notification of next of kin.

The operator of the escape, a 24-year-old male from Seaford, DE was properly restrained and did not sustain injuries.

Northbound DuPont Boulevard was closed for approximately 2.5 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

Earlier this month, on September 1, 2019, a 57-year-old Frankford man was injured in a similar accident on Burbage Road (CR 353) just east of East Sherwood Drive.   He was transported to the Christina Hospital in critical condition.
