Townsend – Just after 9:30 last evening rescue crews from across New Castle County responded to Route 1 in the area of New Discovery Road for reports of two vehicles off the roadway.
First arriving crews reporting that two tractor-trailers were are off the road.
Crews reported that the trucks were down a ravine about fifty feet. Images from the scene show a mangled guard rail where the trucks left the roadway.
Arriving crews ordered Route 1 NB has been closed and Route 13 closed in the area of the crash.
After almost nine hours firefighters and HAZMAT crews cleared the scene at around 6:15 Thursday Morning. The scene has been turned over to DelDOT and Delaware State Police. It’s believed that one lane of Route 13 is getting by and Route 1 NB is still closed. Traffic is being diverted onto Route 13 south of Smyrna.
One driver sustained minor injuries as a result of the crash.

Route 1 NB is now OPEN. Route 13 NB will only have the left lane open shortly as cleanup work continues.

“The Delaware State Police are investigating a crash involving two tractor-trailers that has completely closed SR 1 northbound at the south Smyrna exit.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:37 p.m., Wednesday, October 23, 2019, on SR 1 northbound in the area of Union Church Rd., Townsend. As a result of the crash, all northbound lanes of SR 1 are closed at the south Smyrna exit. DELDOT crews are in the process of doing repair to a damaged guardrail at this time and there is no estimated time for a re-opening. One operator sustained non-life threatening injuries. Further details will be released as they become available.”
