Two Firefighters Injured During Tuesday Morning House Fire

New Castle – Just before 8:00 this morning firefighters from the Minquadale fire Company along with crews from across New Castle County responding to a house fire in the unit block of Newport Avenue in West Minquadale.

Upon their arrival crews reported a working fire and began their attack while simultaneously conducting a search for victims. No one was found in the home.

Shortly after firefighters arrived on scene, Minquadale Command reported that two firefighters suffered minor burn injuries and would be transported to Christiana Hospital.

As the fire raged a column of heavy black smoke rose into the sky. As crews began to gain control of the fire the smoke turned into a large plume of white smoke.

At around 8:30 Minquadale Command placed the fire under control, with firefighters working to mop up hotspots.

The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office has determined that this morning’s house fire in New Castle, DE. was accidental, according to Delaware State Fire MarshalChief Deputy Robert Fox. 

Deputies from the State Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the scene and determined that the fire originated in the enclosed porch in the front of the residence and was caused by discarded smoking materials.

Damage is estimated at approximately $100,000. The Red Cross of Delmarva is assisting five residents of the building.
