Milford – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian that occurred at approximately 6:06 p.m., Friday, November 29, 2019, on DuPont Blvd. (US 113) just south of Airport Road in Milford, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Michael Austin.
Austin said the initial investigation has determined that a 1994 Chrysler LHS, operated by an 80-year-old Seaford man, was traveling southbound on DuPont Blvd. in the left lane, just south of Airport Road. A pedestrian, identified as 52-year-old George A. Burton of Milford, was attempting to cross DuPont Blvd. and walked directly into the path of the Chrysler. The driver attempted to brake, but could not avoid striking the pedestrian, who was thrown onto the hood of the vehicle and then onto the pavement in the left lane of travel. The pedestrian was then struck by two additional vehicles, which did not remain on scene, said Austin. The Chrysler came to a controlled stop and remained on scene.
The investigation determined that the pedestrian was not wearing any reflective clothing, not carrying a light, and not utilizing a crosswalk. The area where he was attempting to cross has no overhead street lighting.
The victim was initially transported to Bayhealth Milford before being transferred to Christiana Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the Chrysler who was properly restrained was also transported to Bayhealth Milford where he was treated for minor injuries.
DuPont Blvd. was closed for approximately 4 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
The Troop 3 Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate on behalf of the Milford Police Department. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Sgt. J. Wheatley by calling (302) 698-8518.
