Troopers: Bystander Aids Police Officer When Bike Thief Attacks

Ocean View- The Delaware State Police have arrested 34-year-old Christopher A. Thompson for an assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Resisting Arrest and other related charges, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Melissa Jaffe.

Jaffe said the incident occurred on December 15, 2019, at approximately 3:29 p.m., when Troopers were dispatched to the Fox’s Pizza, located at 200 Atlantic Avenue in Millville, for a report of a bicycle theft in progress.

A description of the suspect and bike were provided, when an Ocean View Police Officer saw the subject, Christopher Thompson on Atlantic Avenue and attempted to make contact with him. The Officer advised Thompson to wait for the arrival of the Delaware State Police when Thompson began to walk away, said Jaffe. The Officer then attempted to take Thompson into custody, when Thompson resisted arrested and proceeded to strike and kick the Officer. The Officer with the assistance of a bystander were subsequently able to take Thompson into custody. The Ocean View Police Officer sustained minor injury that did not require medical attention.

Thompson was transported back to Troop 4 where he was found to be under the influence of alcohol. Thompson was charged with the following:

Assault 2nd Injure a Law Enforcement Officer
Resisting Arrest with Force or Violence
Theft
Disorderly Conduct
Operating a bicycle on highways while DUI

Thompson was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $8501.00 cash-only bond.
