Troopers Identify Driver Killed In Route 7 Crash In Stanton

The Delaware State Police have identified Jaiwon J. Pollard, 23, of Wilmington, as the driver of a Hyundai Elantra who was killed in a motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 6:01 a.m., Monday, December 2, 2019 on Stanton-Christiana Rd. (Rt. 7) at the intersection with Old Rt. 7.

Stanton – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 6:01 a.m., Monday, December 2, 2019 on Stanton-Christiana Rd. (Rt. 7) at the intersection with Old Rt. 7.

The initial investigation has determined that a 2014 Mercedes E350, operated by a 63-year-old Bear woman, was traveling northbound on Stanton-Christiana Rd. in the left lane, approaching the intersection with Old Rt. 7. A 2001 Hyundai Elantra, operated by a 23-year-old Wilmington man, was traveling southbound on Stanton-Christiana Rd. and attempted to turn left onto Old Rt. 7.

The Hyundai turned directly into the path of the Mercedes, with the front of the Mercedes striking the passenger side of the Hyundai. After the impact, the Hyundai came to rest in the northeast corner of the intersection and the Mercedes came to a stop just north of the intersection.

The driver of the Hyundai, who was not properly restrained, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Identification is pending the notification of next of kin.

The driver of the Mercedes, who was properly restrained, was transported to the Christiana Hospital with minor injuries.

Route 7 was closed for over 4 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

Breaking Report

Stanton – Just after 6:00 this morning rescue crews from the Mill Creek Fire Company along with New Castle County Medics responded to Route 7 NB at Stanton-Christiana Road for a vehicle accident with multiple injuries reported.

Upon their arrival crews ordered the road closed and confirmed that one patient had succumbed to their injuries.

An additional patient was also being evaluated.

As a result of the crash Route 7 is closed in both directions in the area of Route 4. All NB traffic is being diverted onto Route 4.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes of travel. The road closure is anticipated to be lengthy with no estimated time for a re-opening.
