Smyrna – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian that occurred in the limits of Smyrna.
The incident occurred on December 3, 2019, at approximately 5:23 p.m., when a 2004 Hyundai Sonata was traveling northbound on Dupont Boulevard (US 13) in the left lane, north of East Glenwood Avenue. A pedestrian was walking in the middle of the left lane, facing southbound, near the south entrance to Smarty Pants Arcade. The operator of the Sonata observed the pedestrian within the roadway and attempted to brake but was unable to avoid the collision. The front of the Sonata struck the pedestrian causing the pedestrian to land within the southbound travel lanes. Following impact, the Sonata came to a controlled stop and remained on scene.
The pedestrian, 67-year-old Carole Anne Kasson of Smyrna, DE, was not wearing any reflective clothing or carrying a light, and crossing the highway not utilizing a crosswalk. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The operator of the Sonata, a 37-year-old female of Clayton, DE, was properly restrained and transported to the Smyrna Bayhealth Medical Center where she was treated for minor injuries and released. There were three juveniles also in the vehicle who were properly restrained and uninjured.
The roadway was closed for approximately 4.5 hours while the investigation was completed and the roadway was cleared.
The crash remains remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
Breaking Report
Just after 5:20, Tuesday evening rescue crews from the Citizen’s Hose Company of Smyrna, along with crews from the Leipsic VFC, Kent County Medics, and Smyrna Police responded to 304 North Dupont Blvd (The Royal Farms) for reports of a pedestrian struck.
Arriving crews have reported that one pedestrian is deceased after being struck by a vehicle. A second patient has suffered a head injury. It is unclear at this time if the second patient was in the vehicle or is also a pedestrian.
Smyrna Police has issued the following statement “Smyrna PD is currently on the scene of a serious vehicle vs pedestrian collision on US 13 at the Duck Creek bridge. Motorists are urged to avoid the area as the roadway is closed for the investigation. The driver of the striking vehicle remained on scene. More details will be released as they become available.”
Crews have ordered Route 13 closed in both directions.
