A Wilmington Police investigation has resulted in an indictment in connection with an August 2018 murder, according to authorities.
Officials said on August 31, 2018, at approximately 1:00 a.m., Wilmington Police responded to the 200 block of North Van Buren Street regarding a complaint of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers located a 39-year-old male gunshot victim in the 1100 block of Conrad Street. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and was identified as Phillip Chapman.
The case was assigned to Detective Sergeant Thomas Curley of the Criminal Investigations Division. Through the course of his investigation, Sgt. Curley identified 28-year-old Qymere Maddrey as a suspect, officials said. The case was presented to a New Castle County Grand Jury on December 9, and an indictment was returned on the following charges:
Murder (First Degree)
Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited
Maddrey, who was already incarcerated on unrelated charges, was arraigned on December 11 in Justice of the Peace Court 20 and given $700,000 cash-only bail on the above charges. He remains incarcerated on these charges and the unrelated matters.
Chief Robert J. Tracy commended the efforts of investigators in making an arrest in this case.
“Our investigators work tirelessly on each of the cases they are assigned,” said Chief Tracy. “Their work, in this case, is reflective of that, and allows us to bring some closure to the family of the victim.”
