Man Acquitted In Vaughn Prison Riot Trial Arrested On Gun Charges

A former inmate who was acquitted of all charges he faced in connection with the 2017 fatal prison riot at the Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna has been arrested.

On February 1, 2020, at approximately 2:45 a.m., patrol officers were in the area of 5th and Shipley Streets when they were flagged down regarding a suspicious vehicle. Officers made contact with the operator of the vehicle, 33-year-old Roman Shankaras, and found him to be in possession of a loaded 9mm handgun. He was taken into custody without incident.

Shankaras was charged with 2 counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited in addition to a traffic violation.

He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the Delaware Department of Correction on $10,001 cash-only bail.
