Troopers Charge 73-Year-Old Driver In Hit-And-Run, Pedestrian Seriously Injured

Seaford- The Delaware State Police have arrested 73-year-old George L. Smith of Seaford, DE in connection with a serious pedestrian hit and run crash, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Melissa Jaffe.

Jaffe said the incident occurred on February 10, 2020, at approximately 9:54 p.m., when a pedestrian was walking along the edge of the roadway on Middleford Road, west of Old Furnace Road, Seaford. For an unknown reason, the pedestrian entered into the travel lane where he was struck by a passing vehicle. The striking vehicle then exited the roadway and struck a guidewire and a wooden fence, causing property damage.

The pedestrian, a 47-year-old male from Seaford, was transported to the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in serious condition.

Through investigative measures, Smith was identified as the driver of a teal Mazda Pickup truck that fled the scene, said Jaffe.

On February 13, 2020, Smith was taken into custody at his residence located in the 23000 block of Mellin Road, Seaford, without incident. He was transported back to Troop 5 where he was charged with the following:

Leaving the Scene of a Collision Resulting in Injury
Failure to Provide Information At Collision Scene Resulting in Property Damage
Driving With Expired License
Failure to Have Insurance Identification
Failure to Have Registration Card
Expired Tags
Failure to Report a Collision Resulting in Injury or Death

Smith was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $5000.00 cash only.

Seaford – The Delaware State Police are investigating a serious hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian that occurred last evening, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Melissa Jaffe.

Jaffe said the incident occurred on February 10, 2020, at approximately 9:54 p.m., when a pedestrian was walking along the edge of the roadway on Middleford Road, west of Old Furnace Road, in Seaford. For an unknown reason, the pedestrian entered into the travel lane where he was struck by a passing vehicle. The striking vehicle then exited the roadway and struck a guidewire and a wooden fence, causing property damage.

The pedestrian, a 47-year-old male from Seaford, was transported to the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in serious condition.

The striking vehicle was described as a light blue in color Ford Ranger pickup truck. The operator fled the scene and was last seen traveling westbound on Middleford Road, said Jaffe. The vehicle should have front end damage.
