Troopers Identify Man Killed In Accident On Saturday, Newark Man Under Investigation

Milton – The Delaware State Police have identified Steven M. Thompson, 75 of Frederica, as the driver of a Toyota RAV 4, who was killed in a crash that occurred at approximately 2:51 p.m., Saturday, February 8, 2020, on Coastal Hwy., in the area of Eagles Crest Rd., Milton.

Milton – The Delaware State Police are continuing to investigate a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 2:51 p.m., Saturday, February 8, 2020, on Coastal Hwy., in the area of Eagles Crest Road in Milton, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Michael Austin.

Austin said the investigation has determined that a 2020 Toyota RAV 4, operated by a 75-year-old Frederica man, was traveling in the right lane of southbound Coastal Hwy., north of Eagles Crest Road. A 2015 Audi A3, operated by a 31-year-old Newark man, was also traveling southbound on Coastal Hwy. in the right lane, following directly behind the Toyota.

For an undetermined reason, the Audi failed to slow down as it approached the Toyota and struck it from behind. As a result of the impact, the Toyota was forced off the west side of the roadway, where it overturned before coming to rest in a grassy area. The Audi also traveled off the west side of the roadway striking and proceeding through a chain-link fence, before coming to a stop.

The driver of the Toyota, who was ejected from the vehicle, was pronounced deceased at the scene. A 69-year-old female passenger in his vehicle was transported to Beebe Hospital with serious injuries. The identification of the victim is pending notification of next of kin, said Austin.

The driver of the Audi was also transported to Beebe Hospital with serious injuries. Austin said impairment is being deemed as a contributing factor in the crash on his behalf.

Southbound Coastal Hwy. was closed for approximately 4 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

Delaware State Police are currently investigating a serious crash that has caused the partial closure of  Coastal Highway.

Just before 3:00, Saturday afternoon rescue crews from the Lewes Fire Department along with Sussex County Medics and  Delaware State Troopers responded to the southbound lanes of Coastal Highway in the area of Hudson Road for reports of a motor vehicle rollover with entrapment.

Arriving crews confirmed entrapment and began work to free the patients. Early indications are that three patients are very seriously injured.  Multiple vehicles are involved.

As a result of the crash all southbound lanes of Coastal Highway are closed. Motorists will experience extensive delays in the area and are advised to seek alternate routes of travel. There is no estimated time for re-opening of the roadway.

Trooper 2, originally dispatched to the crash, was recalled.
