On July 14, 2017, at approximately 11:26 p.m., police were dispatched to the 1200 block of West 3rd Street in reference to a shooting incident where they located a male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds to his face and torso areas. Officers rendered medical aid to the victim prior to the arrival of New Castle County Paramedics, who treated the victim on scene and transported him to the Christiana Hospital Emergency Room in critical condition. The victim, identified as Cyree Watson, 22, of Wilmington, later succumbed to his injuries.
The case was assigned to Detective Mary Quinn of the Criminal Investigations Division. Through the course of her investigation, Detective Quinn identified 28-year-old Clarence Rivera as a suspect in the case.
On March 2, she presented her case to a New Castle County Grand Jury, which returned an indictment against Rivera. He was taken into custody without incident on March 3, and has been charged with the following offenses:
Murder (First Degree)
Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited
Rivera was arraigned in the New Castle County Superior Court and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $1,620,000 cash-only bail.
