Police: One Charged After Victim Choked Unconscious, Assaulted, Drug Charges For Another

The Dover Police Department arrested one man on assault-related charges and another for drug charges following an altercation on Thursday afternoon, according to M/Cpl. Mark Hoffman, Public Information Officer.

Hoffman said officers were originally called for a fight in the parking lot of U.S. Gas, located on Bay Road. Officers contacted an 18-year-old male victim who had sustained multiple injuries, including serious head injuries.

Hoffman said the investigation revealed that Jiar Johnson, 23, assaulted the victim and used a choke-hold to make the victim lose consciousness, and continued to assault him.

The victim was transported to Kent General Hospital for treatment for his injuries.

Johnson was committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on the following offenses:
-Assault 2nd Degree
-Strangulation
-Disorderly Conduct

Shaheed Berry, 21, was contacted during the investigation and found to be in possession of 30 bags of heroin, 10 grams of marijuana, and $435 in drug proceeds (cash), said Hoffman. Berry was released on his own recognizance on the following offenses:
-Possession with Intent to Deliver Heroin
-Possession of Marijuana
-Drug Paraphernalia
