Troopers Investigating Fatal Rogers Road Crash

Wilmington– The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer that occurred at approximately 5:38 p.m., on May 11, 2020, on Rogers Road west of Oakmont Drive intersection, according to Public Information Officer, Senior Corporal Heather Pepper.

Pepper said a 2018 Nissan Altima operated by a 29-year-old man from Newark, was stopped on the right shoulder of eastbound Rogers Road west of Oakmont Drive intersection, facing eastbound. The operator of the Altima backed the vehicle into a private residential driveway in the 400 block of Rogers Road and then proceeded to make a left turn to travel west on Rogers Road. When the vehicle entered the roadway, it turned directly into the path of a 2012 Volvo tractor-trailer operated by a 44-year-old man from Newark. The front portion of the Nissan collided with the left side of the Tractor Trailer. After impact, both vehicles continued eastbound together and eventually came to rest within the right shoulder east of Oakmont Drive.

The operator of the Nissan was properly restrained but sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The operator of the tractor-trailer and his passenger were both properly restrained. They were transported to Wilmington Hospital where they were treated and released for minor, non-life threatening injuries.

As a result of the crash, Rogers Road between Cornell Drive and New Castle Avenue was closed for approximately 3 hours while the collision was investigated and cleared.

The Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the crash.
