New Castle Man Arrested In Brandywine Park Sexual Assault Case

Wilmington Police (WPD) have arrested and charged a 35-year-old New Castle man in connection with a sexual assault that took place in Brandywine Park.

Officials said on May 29, 2020, at approximately 8:30 a.m., a sexual assault occurred in Brandywine Park in the area of North Park Drive and the Washington Street overpass. Although the incident took place in the DNREC’s Natural Resources Police jurisdiction WPD Criminal Investigations Division assumed the lead role in the investigation, which was assigned to Detective Mary Quinn.

Through the course of her investigation, Detective Quinn identified 35-year-old Byron Mayhan of New Castle as a suspect in the incident, officials said Monday. Arrest warrants for Mayhan were obtained on the following charges:

Rape (First Degree) – 5 Counts
Robbery (First Degree)
Kidnapping (First Degree)
Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony
Possession of a Deadly Weapon by a Person Prohibited
Terroristic Threatening

He was taken into custody in Baltimore, Maryland on Sunday, June 29, by the United States Marshals Service Task Force.

His arraignment on the above charges is pending extradition to Delaware.
