Newark Police have charged two men, a father and his son, in the June Madison Drive, shots fired incident.
On June 29, 2020, at about 11:19 [p.m., Newark Police responded to the unit block of Madison Drive for a report of shots fired. Officers contacted residents in the area who reported hearing arguing in the area between two houses. Officers located shell casings between the residences.
Detectives investigating the case were able to identify the person who fired a gun into the air as Jermaine Washington, 37, of Newark, officials said Friday. Further investigation determined that Washington had been given the gun by his son, Jermaine Washington-Loper, 19, of Newark, according to police.
On July 16, 2020, both suspects turned themselves into Newark Police. Officers then executed a search warrant at men’s residence A handgun, reported stolen from Wilmington, was recovered, however, the gun is not believed to be the handgun used in this incident, officials said. Police say the handgun used in the Madison Drive incident has not been recovered.
Jermaine Washington, who is prohibited by law from possessing a firearm, was charged with:
Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited (2 counts)
Reckless Endangering Second Degree (2 counts)
Receiving a Stolen Firearm
Jermaine Washington-Loper, who is prohibited by law from possessing a firearm, was charged with:
Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited (2 counts)
Receiving a Stolen Firearm
Both defendants appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #2 by video. Jermaine Washington was ordered to be held in default of $29,000 cash bail. Jermaine Washington-Loper was ordered to be held in default of $7,000 secured bail. Both defendants were turned over to the custody of the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington.
