Investigators Say $20,000 Hay Fire Was Intentionally Set

The Delaware Office of the State Fire Marshal has determined that a fire in Frankford, Delaware last night was deliberately started, according to Assistant State Fire Marshal Michael Chionchio.

Chionchio said the blaze, reported shortly before 2:00 am, occurred in the 30000 block of Gum Road. The Frankford Volunteer Fire Company arrived on the scene with several bales of straw on fire. Frankford was assisted by several neighboring mutual aid fire companies. There were no reported injuries.

Deputy fire marshals were called to the scene to determine the origin and cause of the fire. The fire was intentionally started by a person or persons, according to Chionchio. Investigators have launched a criminal investigation and are seeking help from the public. Anyone with information is asked to call Delaware Crime Stoppers at (800) TIP-3333.

Heavy fire damage was contained to approximately 550 bales of straw and estimated at a $20,000 loss.
