Just In: Six Animals Perish In Plumpton Park Zoo Fire Saturday

Six animals have perished as a result of a structure fire Saturday, officials said earlier today.

Investigators with the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal said that at around 8:04 firefighters from the Community Fire Company of Rising Sun responded to the 1400 block of Telegraph Road in Rising Sun, Cecil County, Maryland for a single-story wood-frame structure fire at Plumpton Park Zoo.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire in the Reptile Building under control approximately twenty minutes after their arrival.

Officials said four birds and two snakes succumbed during the fire. The fire has been ruled accidental, due to an unspecified electrical event within the building.

Damage to the structure was estimated at $150,000.
