16-Year-Old Killed In Philadelphia Pike Accident Tuesday

Wilmington– Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash involving a bicyclist that occurred at approximately 12:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 29, 2020, at the intersection of Philadelphia Pike and Bellevue Parkway, according to Public Information Officer, Corporal/1 Jason Hatchell.

Hatchell said the initial investigation has determined a 2012 Hino box truck operated by a 49-year-old male from Prospect Park, Pennsylvania, was stopped in the left turn lane of northbound Philadelphia Pike. The traffic signal displayed a green arrow and the box truck proceed to turn left onto Bellevue Parkway. At the same time, a bicyclist was riding northbound along the southbound lanes of Philadelphia Pike. As the box truck completed its left turn, the bicyclist struck the driver’s side of the vehicle.

The operator of the bicycle, a 16-year-old male from Wilmington, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene. His name is being withheld at this time pending the notification of next of kin.

Southbound Philadelphia Pike was closed for approximately 2.5 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
