Bridgeville- Delaware State Police are investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash on Seashore Highway (SR 18) east of Oak Road, according to Public Information Officer, Senior Corporal Heather Pepper.
Pepper said on September 5, 2020, at approximately 3:36 p.m., a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta operated by a 34-year-old male from Milford, was traveling eastbound on Seashore Highway (SR 18), attempting to pass a slower vehicle directly in front of him. As the operator changed into the westbound lane to start passing the vehicle, he observed another vehicle traveling westbound. To avoid colliding with the other vehicle in the westbound lane, the operator swerved back into the eastbound lane, nearly striking the vehicle he intended to pass. As a result, the operator failed to maintain his lane and exited the south edge of the roadway, where he rolled over multiple times before coming to rest, upright in a cornfield.
The operator of the vehicle was not properly restrained and was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased shortly after arriving. Identification is pending notification of next to kin.
Seashore Highway was closed for approximately 3 hours during the investigation and clean- up.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to contact Detective A. Mitchell of the Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit by calling 302-644-5020.
