New Castle – The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a motorcycle and a second vehicle, according to Public Information Officer, Sergeant Darren Lester.
Lester said the incident occurred on Friday, October 2, 2020, at approximately 3:59 p.m., during which a 2003 Honda VT6 motorcycle was traveling eastbound in the right thru lane of Christiana Rd (SR273) approaching the intersection of Airport Road (SR37).
The second vehicle, a 2009 Toyota Camry was initially stopped in the left turn lane of westbound Christiana Road (SR273) with a solid green traffic control signal displayed at the intersection of Airport Road SR37. As the motorcycle approached the intersection, the traffic control signal for eastbound traffic was also displaying a solid green light. At the same time, the Toyota Camry initiated a left turn and drove into the path of the motorcycle, said Lester.
The front of the motorcycle then struck the passenger side of the Camry. At the time of the crash, the male motorcycle operator was not wearing a helmet. The motorcycle operator was transported to the hospital and was later pronounced deceased after succumbing to his injuries. Release of the rider’s name pending the notification of next of kin.
The male operator of the Toyota Camry did not sustain injuries as a result of the collision. He was properly restrained and was the sole occupant in his vehicle.
The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate. Christiana Rd (SR273) between Appleby Road and Airport Road was closed for over two hours during the course of the on-scene investigation.
