Officials: Clayton House Fire Caused By Fire Pit Embers

Officials with the Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Offices have released a statement regarding yesterday’s fire in Clayton.

Shortly before 2:00 PM in the 100 block of Sunrise Dr in the Jockey Hollow development in Clayton, DE.

The Clayton Fire Company responded to the 911 call from the occupants of the home and arrived with heavy fire involving a 2 story single-family dwelling.

Assistance was requested from several neighboring DE fire companies, as well as, Millington Fire Company in MD.

The fire was placed under control approximately one hour into the incident. Deputy State Fire Marshals responded to investigate the cause of the fire and determined the fire began on the exterior of the home when embers from an unattended fire pit spread to the dwelling. No injuries were reported and damages are estimated at $150,000. The Red Cross of Delmarva was contacted for assistance.

Breaking Report

Just before 2:00 Sunday afternoon,  Firefighters from several Kent County fire companies were dispatched to the 100 block of Sunrise Drive in Clayton for a reported structure fire

Responding crews arrived on scene to find heavy fire showing from the rear of a two-story single-family home.

Initial reports indicate that all occupants made it out of the home prior to the firefighter’s arrival. As they began their offensive attack firefighters simultaneously searched all levels of the building for occupants with negative results. Radio reports indicate that a pet dog was pulled from the home during the search. No word on the pet’s injuries.

Two individuals were evaluated at the scene by medical crews, one for possible smoke inhalation and another for glass to the face.

At 2:45 PM, the fire had still not been knocked down, crews reporting that the fire was in the attic and warning of a possible impending collapse.

About 10 minutes later at 2:55, Command placed the fire under control with units working.
